A proposal by Jim Fussell Jr.

I challenge all readers to focus on this series of “Thinking Outside the Box”. This opportunity is unorthodox, unheard of and highly effective.

Everyday we watch the news or read where there are mass shootings or vehicles used as killing machines. Our youth are making choices, taking paths that are unhealthy, violent. Society often sits back feeling helpless, asking why no one noticed, no one intervened, how could such a thing happen here?

Unfortunately steps to prevent such tragedies ” BEFORE” they occur, are not taken. No one expects or has a crystal ball. It is vital that we take steps before these young people go down the road of no return.

I urge each of you to click onto YouTube, check out JIM FUSSELL MARION. Please watch all 18 minutes of my TEDx talk, then ask yourself, does this person have the ability to keep a audiences’ attention, to show compassion, empathy, is he sincere, does he enlighten the viewer?

After viewing this TEDx talk you now realize that I am a convicted murderer, a incarcerated individual serving time in Ohio. I have served 47 years, arrested in 1978 for two senseless murders.

Kids today would be well served to hear my journey, walk-in my shoes of self destruction, poor choices, how I bullied classmates, how my actions have devastated countless lives.

I propose that those in power make some arrangements to select a high school, a large one, enlist a film crew with audio, to record and capture the two hour event. Youth would be invited to ask questions and receive thoughtful, honest answers.

Officials would be expected/encouraged to assign two professional sharpshooters from local law enforcement agencies, to keep laser lights from their sighted rifles, on my chest at all times. Those lights would keep the audience on the edge of their seats and listening to every word. The event would not he forgotten.

Never do we find anyone willing to put themselves in the line of fire for any reason. However, saving lives is the goal here. I believe in myself and believe snipers have self control…. Or not.

I am willing and eager to use my own life as an example. Never use the words DON’T DO THIS OR DON’T DO THAT. Those words tend to result in the opposite happening.

I have the ability to be humble, relatable, and sincere. By sharing how I at onetime in my early years, was a bully, and how years later I regretted my actions, even issuing a public apology on social media. How my entire assortment of bad choices has haunted me daily.

Sadly, many school shooters are victims of bullies. My goal is to share the before and after paths that I took. Connecting with someone on similar path, trying to alter their path so they don’t make same choices.

Drugs & alcohol are too common. I want to share my experiences and open the eyes of young people that vices are not the answer. Even smoking leads to nothing good.

If I had heard someone like me when I was in high school, my path would have been very different. I firmly believe that. I know there are scared straight programs now that are far less effective, unrealistic, staged. I propose genuine, raw interaction that stays with everyone.

I offer a “safety switch” that perhaps has never been available in such raw form. You have to fight fire with fire. Be bold, take chances to make a real difference.

In 47 years of incarceration, I have witnessed many horrific things and many crimes. I have become a walking encyclopedia with insight into human nature.

No matter what number of youths were to witness such a event as I propose, realistically the chance of altering some behavior, paths could likely be the difference between saving lives or not. By doing nothing, we are guaranteed to save no one.

If you play the lottery, you stand a chance of winning. If you don’t buy a ticket, there is 100% chance of winning nothing.

Together we save ONE LIFE, we win. I have tried for years to get ODRC (Ohio department of Rehabilitation & corrections) to think outside the box and make this happen. Professors are various locations around the state. No one has been affected by anything to make them stand up and accept this challenge.

One gesture can touch so many lives from all parts of the world. It costs nothing, merely willingness to say yes.
